What Reddit downvotes are, and what one order puts on a post

The number beside a Reddit thread is one balance rather than two counters. In the ranking code Reddit published as open source, a thread's score comes out as its upvotes minus its downvotes, so an arrow on either side moves the same printed figure. This is the only counter we sell that moves a number down.
Because the score is a net balance, the visible movement can be smaller while readers are adding upvotes at the same time. We put the ordered step against the link, then the public figure continues to move with later Reddit activity.
Reddit's site-wide rules cover vote manipulation, and each community sets its own on top of them. What sits with us is narrower than that: the quantity on the step you pick, and the single public link it goes to.

For divided work, the same rule is applied line by line. A 500 order split across several posts is checked against the quantity assigned to each post. It is not calculated from total score movement across the whole set.
